NAIS was initially set up for big Agri business to monitor beef export during the mad cow scare. Like many other arrangements, the masses end up paying the price for the privileged. The cost of this program will crush our small farmers while giving the advantage to large corporate farming industries.

The goal of NAIS extends beyond livestock, and aims to include all pets and soon farm products. Verizon provided data to Feds 720 times without court order or determining its legality

As Congress debates whether to shield phone and Internet companies from lawsuits alleging they mishandled customers' private records, Verizon, the nations second-largest telecommunications firm, said it has provided telephone and Internet records to federal investigators hundreds of times since 2005.

Verizon has provided data to federal authorities on an emergency basis without a court order -- and without determining the requests' legality -- 720 times between January 2005 and September of this year. The company's revelation came in a 13-page letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee released Monday.

Committee Chairman John D. Dingell (D-MI) and two other Democrats on the panel also requested information from AT&T, and Qwest Communications about those companies compliance with federal requests for customer data, but those companies responses were not as detailed as Verizon's.

"The responses from these telecommunication companies highlight the need for Congress to continue pressing the Bush administration for answers," said Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), one of the committee member requesting the information. "The water is as murky as ever on this issue and it's past time for the administration to come clean." →

So I'm watching the Bill Maher show and starting to doze off as Sheila Jackson Lee spouts some sort of moronic socialist nonsense, and all of a sudden I'm jarred alert as the show gets sucked into a bizarre alternate reality by a loud shouting voice from the audience. I have no idea what the guy was shouting, but all of a sudden Bill Maher is charging into the audience, calling for security and they've got the guy surrounded and are dragging him from the hall.

At this point it all becomes clear - thanks to my DVR at 1/15th speed - because I can read the sign he's attempting to hold up and it says "Expose the 9/11 Coverup." After he's hustled out spraying flyers in his wake, Maher attempts to get things back on track to be interrupted first by a woman shouting "What about Building 7, Bill?" and then by a man shouting "Tell us what happened to building 7, Bill" and some other incomprehensible business about the government blowing up the towers. Well, they're dragged out in turn, and the discussion got back on track after a few sarcastic comments and Maher pointing out that of all the groups he's offended the only ones regularly protesting outside his studio are the 9/11 'Truthers'. →

Before the roof of the North tower of the World Trade Centre became hidden in dust it was falling at a rate which would have brought it to the ground in 10.5 seconds. The US administration expects us to believe that this fall rate is reasonable for a fire and plane damaged building. For comparison the roof on the right in this drawing, freely falling in a vacuum, would take 9.2 seconds.

Data published by NIST shows that the steel was not hot enough for the collapse to begin. There are also engineers who have worked out that, even if collapse did begin at the damaged level, it would not continue, but would quickly come to a halt.

That may be hard to validate, unless you can deal with complex calculations, but what about this time difference, just 1.3 seconds? Does not ordinary common sense tell you that the block on the left will be slowed down if it has to crush its way through over 90 storeys of cold steel and concrete? Would it not take more than 1.3 seconds longer than the one on the right, freely falling?

Does this not imply that the undamaged, unheated lower part of the building suddenly lost structural strength in some way? Is there any explanation other than explosives that could account for this sudden loss of strength?

No steel framed building has ever collapsed due to fire except on that day, when three tall buildings came down, and they came down impossibly fast. →

Daniels of the Southern District of New York signed a court order "unsealing" a 9/11 complaint filed by Dr. Judy Wood against the National Institute of Standards and Technology on April 25, 2007. “This may prove to be a crucial turning points in exposing the official cover-up of what actually happened on that tragic day,” observed Fetzer.

The complaint alleges that contractors hired by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, violated the so-called False Claims Act in their work originally intended to “determine why and how WTC 1 and WTC 2 collapsed following the initial impacts of the aircraft.” Dr. Wood is suing on behalf of the United States of America because the U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, which represents "the government," declined to intervene in the case, a so-called “Qui Tam” lawsuit, Fetzer said. →

Fictional bomb to test disaster response in Tempe

Arizona authorities will set off a fictional "dirty bomb" in Tempe next week.

But as high-profile as that sounds, they hope the terrorism exercise goes entirely unnoticed by the public.

That's because nothing actually will be detonated, and no actual emergency responders will be deployed.

The Top Officials exercise -- dubbed TOPOFF 4 -- is part of what will be the nation's largest terrorism drill ever and is the fourth in a series of exercises mandated by Congress.

The exercise begins Tuesday and is designed to test officials' response to hypothetical mass casualties and widespread radiological contamination.

In addition to the "attack" in Tempe at the Loop 101 and 202 freeways, "dirty bombs" will go off at a Cabras power plant in Guam and on the Steel Bridge in Portland, Oregon.

In a new video making its rounds on the internet, one band of miffed Los Angeles-based "Truthers" borrows the graphics, theme music and trademark bite of Maher's popular "New Rules" segment to push back at the comedian's charges that conspiracy theorists are lunatics. "Crazy people are defined by acting crazy," activist Stewart Howe says in the clip, sitting alongside a Maher-esque video window depicting Fox News host Bill O'Reilly in a straight jacket. Thousands of people took part in a 90-minute rally in Trafalgar Square before marching down Whitehall towards Parliament on Monday.

Organisers of the demonstration said the last-minute decision to let the march go ahead was a "significant blow" for democracy and liberty.

A number of students, trade union activists and peace campaigners joined the demonstration. They heard a series of speeches from politicians, union leaders and peace campaigners demanding that Gordon Brown brings all British troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lindsey German, convener of the Stop The War coalition, said the group had been told time and again by police in recent days that they could not go ahead with the march. She said the authorities and MPs had underestimated the determination of the anti-war movement.

"And we don't want the troops brought home just so they can be sent to Afghanistan or the Iranian border. We want a permanent break with George Bush's murderous, imperialistic policies." →

We behave as if we are addicted to radiation. Our addiction to cell phones has led to harder "drugs" like wireless Internet. And now we are bathing in the radiation that our wireless enthusiasm has financed. The addicted, uninformed, corporately biased and politically-influenced may dismiss our scientifically-sound concerns about the apocalyptic hazards of wireless radiation. But we must not. Instead, we must sound the alarm.

Illa Garcia wore jewelry the first day she went back to work as a fire lookout for the state of California in the summer of 2002. The intense radiation from dozens of RF/microwave antennas surrounding the lookout heated the metals on her body enough to burn her skin. "I still have those scars," she says. Performance artist Laura Milkins, a graduate student at the University of Arizona, proved it on Sept. 25 when she strolled the campus dressed in pasties and a G-string (per Arizona public indecency statutes, printed on said G-string) and body paint. She collaborated with political activist-artist Heather Woodrich and Brazilian painter Eliane Paulino. Woodrich painted the front half of Milkins' body red, with the World Trade Center's twin towers afire in blue on the upper half of Milkins' torso. Paulino used Milkins' "back canvas" as the site for a painting about the oil industry and environmental concerns. The body painting alone took roughly three hours. →

Counterpunch co-editor Alexander Cockburn set the tone of these pieces with an article describing theologian and ethicist David Ray Griffin, the author of The New Pearl Harbor (2004) and of The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions (2005), as a “high priest” of the “conspiracy nuts”—whom Cockburn denounces as cultists who “disdain all answers but their own,” who “seize on coincidences and force them into sequences they deem to be logical and significant,” and who “pounce on imagined clues in documents and photos, [….] contemptuously brush[ing] aside” evidence that contradicts their own “whimsical” treatment of “eyewitness testimony and forensic evidence.” →

BAGHDAD, Sept. 25 -- A confrontation between the U.S. military and the State Department is unfolding over the involvement of Blackwater USA in the shooting deaths of Iraqi civilians in a Baghdad square Sept. 16, bringing to the surface long-simmering tensions between the military and private security companies in Iraq, according to U.S. military and government officials.

In high-level meetings over the past several days, U.S. military officials have pressed State Department officials to assert more control over Blackwater, which operates under the department's authority, said a U.S. government official with knowledge of the discussions. "The military is very sensitive to its relationship that they've built with the Iraqis being altered or even severely degraded by actions such as this event," the official said. →

The REAL Rudy Please Stand Up

Turned out he would be right here in Southern California accepting an endorsement from widely discredited Pete Wilson, who's known for exploiting racial division for votes, and pushing the horrible proposition 187. Then off to a $2300-a-plate fundraiser at the Biltmore Four Seasons in Santa Barbara with Bo Derek.

John attended the "open to anyone" endorsement announcement, but was quickly escorted out when they learned he was from Brave New Films! (Read John's blog about the whole event) Quietly though, Phillip snuck through and got the full deal on tape. Always send two people!
