Unwanted Exposure:Preventing Environmental Threats to the Health of Children

Heather Loukmas, Stephen Boese, Marianne McCoy

Unwanted Exposure classifies and catalogues the major environmental health hazards linked to chronic childhood diseases. And, in a final section, the report reviews the current status of children’s health protection in New York State through a series of interviews with key staff from the state departments of Health, Education and Environmental Conservation. In this final section, Unwanted Exposure also looks at other state agencies with responsibilities for providing services to children. Too often, these agencies lack access to the information and resources they need to effectively address children’s environmental health needs. In conclusion, Unwanted Exposure demonstrates that some existing programs and services are under-resourced, uncoordinated and insufficiently focused to meet children’s needs.
