Colombia paramilitaries spread fear

For decades, Colombian citizens have been caught in the middle of turf battles between leftist guerrilla groups and right-wing paramilitaries.
In 2006 the largest of those right-wing groups - the United Self Defence Forces of Colombia - was officially demobilised and disbanded after striking a deal with the government.
But now there are concerns that remnants of these groups have joined forces, fuelled by a surge in drug trafficking, and are presenting a new threat.

10 dead as tornado hits Yazoo City, Mississippi

A state of emergency's been declared across the U.S. state of Mississippi after a tornado ripped through several counties killing at least ten. Authorities say more than a dozen are wounded with children among the dead. The severe weather caused widespread damage to the region. Several houses were flattened and fallen trees are blocking roads.

Flights resume in Europe but ash warnings remain

London's Heathrow airport, one of the world's busiest travel hubs, has re-opened for landings after a six-day air travel freeze across most of Europe that grounded some 95,000 flights.
European authorities say many more airports across the continent are set to reopen on Wednesday.
But the ash clouds are still visible and shows no sign of letting up as wind currents move it across the UK. Technical experts say it still represents a real danger to aircraft in the sky.
For now, though, airlines are celebrating a breakthrough allowing them to bring passengers home and stem losses which could top $1bn.

Apocalyptic Reaction: Airlines deep in the hole push EU to lift ban

EU Ministers are due to hold emergency talks on the air travel chaos caused by plumes of ash from a volcano in Iceland.
The crisis is entering its fifth day with airspace remaining closed in over twenty countries. Desperate airlines are putting pressure on EU leaders to lift the flight ban, saying it's already cost them over a billion euros. Some companies have undertaken test flights into European air space to prove its safety. Some experts say the safety measures are 'unnecessary' and describe the situation as 'air hysteria'.

Emails show CIA detroyed interrogation tapes

More than one-hundred pages of newly released documents from the US's top intelligence branch are providing the clearest look yet at the CIA's decision to destroy videotapes of detainee interrogation. The new documents show that Porter Goss, the then CIA chief, agreed with the decision to destroy the tapes, though they show he did not know of the destruction until after it occurred. They also reveal that almost immediately after the destruction, CIA officials worried they had done something wrong, if not illegal.
