Outcry over Obama address

A plan by Barack Obama, the US president, to deliver a speech to US public school children has sparked an angry outcry from some conservative parents who accuse the president of trying to indoctrinate their children.

The parents and other conservative political commentators say Obama's planned speech on Tuesday is an attempt to teach their children socialist ideas.

They have called on school authorities to excuse their children from listening.

The White House has said the back-to-school speech will impart on students the importance of getting an education and will focus on how students should take personal responsibility for their own success in school.
