Verdict expected in first case of extraordinary renditions program
September 29, 2009
The kidnapping case of Abu Omar, an Egyptian cleric and terror suspect, is underway. Omar had been living in Italy when 26 U.S. secret agents allegedly kidnapped him and sent him back to Cairo. Omar was then allegedly held in an Egyptian prison and tortured. Many people say the incident was part of a series of secret kidnappings that took place around the world since September 11, 2001. This is the first trial in the extraordinary renditions program and a verdict is expected later this year.
