The incidents in the Gulf OF TONKIN involving the USS MADDOX on the day of AUG 4 exponentially increased US troop involvement in the Vietnam War.

That history now knows that on Aug 4 1964 nothing actually happened is probably not much consolation the families of all those people whose names adorn the Vietnam memorial.
