Rice: Torture legal if authorized by President
By David Edwards
A group of students at Stanford confronted former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice about her role in authorizing the waterboarding of detainees. Rice said that she didnt authorize torture. Rather, she just conveyed the authorization to the CIA.
Rice also contended that waterboarding wasnt illegal because it had been authorized by President Bush. The United States was told, we were told, nothing that violates our obligations under the Convention Against Torture, and so by definition, if it was authorized by the president, it did not violate our obligations under the Convention Against Torture, she said.
