Rethink Military Escalation in Afghanistan

Afghanistan represents a quagmire we cannot afford. We cannot tolerate a continuance of the Bush administration's blunt use of military force, particularly when 155 US soldiers and over 1,500 Afghan civilians died last year -- the bloodiest year of this war to date. Nor can we afford a war that costs $36 billion annually -- a colossal amount that will increase exponentially with escalation -- when up to eight million Americans face foreclosure in an economic crisis of historic proportions.

We must rethink our policy toward Afghanistan. Congressional oversight hearings on Afghanistan would facilitate a substantial public debate on this war. What's more, these hearings would coincide with President Obama's effort to craft policy that represents the diversity in public opinion and the wide array of tools at his disposal.
