WHO warns of severe form of swine flu

Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor
Fri Aug 28, 2009
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Doctors are reporting a severe form of swine flu that goes straight to the lungs, causing severe illness in otherwise healthy young people and requiring expensive hospital treatment, the World Health Organization said Friday.

Some countries are reporting that as many as 15 percent of patients hospitalized with the new H1N1 pandemic virus need intensive care, further straining already overburdened healthcare systems, WHO said in an update on the pandemic.

"During the winter season in the southern hemisphere, several countries have viewed the need for intensive care as the greatest burden on health services," it said.

"Preparedness measures need to anticipate this increased demand on intensive care units, which could be overwhelmed by a sudden surge in the number of severe cases."

Forty-first U.S. President George Herbert Walker Bush has taken a lot of flak over the years for advocating a "new world order" in at least four different speeches he delivered during 1990-91. Historians, scholars, and "conspiracy theorists" seem to have overlooked the fact that President Richard Nixon called for a new world order almost 19 years before Bush's infamous "New World Order Speech" delivered on Sept. 11, 1990. And he did this in Communist China, of all places.

Senator Sanders Unfiltered: Farewell Senator

bravenewfilms
August 27, 2009
Ted Kennedy will go down in history as one of the giants of the U.S. Senate and one the most accomplished legislators in American history. He will also be remembered, by those who knew him, as an extremely warm and caring human being whose public service was a brilliant reflection of his love and devotion to his country, his friends and his family.

As a member of the Senate health and education committee, chaired by Senator Kennedy, I was always impressed by his intelligence, knowledge and seriousness of purpose. His career in public service was driven by a deep sense of compassion and a belief that, in this great country, every American should be entitled to quality health care, education and other basic needs as well as equal justice under the law.

His passion was that every single American has health care as a right of citizenship. He understood that there was something lacking in our country today when we remained the only nation in the industrialized world that does not provide health care to all people.

Barack Obama's close relationship with the U.S. media may be souring. As the American President's approval ratings continue to slide, the administration is growing increasingly frustrated with media coverage of the President and his policies.
